[PODCAST] Tigers All-Star Break
Shep talks about the Detroit Tigers season at the All-Star break, and if this team is meeting its expectations. Also, what should the team do if Jhonny Peralta is suspended for his link to Biogenesis?
The Tigers are in first place at the All-Star break. They may not boast the best record in baseball or even the best record in their league, but they are in the mix and isn't that what matters?
Look, I think this team should have shown more consistency so far, but considering the injury to Austin Jackson put him on the shelf for 30 games, Omar Infante has missed 11 games now, Victor Martinez had struggled until the calendar turned July and the back of the bullpen was a mess until the stabilizing forces of Drew Smyly and Joaquin Benoit, maybe the situation isn't quite so desperate.
Most of baseball is talking about how much of a surprise Boston has been and how they can be viewed as the best team in baseball. Well the Red Sox have 19 series wins to help them reach the best record in the game. The Tigers have 17. Detroit is better in every significant team category from last season, and just about every category compared to 2006 as well.
I think that, because this team came so close last year and because of its payroll and preseason hype, anything less than 60 wins at this point of the year would have been viewed as a disappointment. This team has room for improvement without question and it recognizes it, and that's the good thing.
Maybe this team will gain its needed consistency, or maybe it will make a move that will help that process, but so far this team hasn't been as bad as people think. The concern is that Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer can't duplicate their pre-All-Star numbers. That's a fair point, but I would also contend there are some guys who could be a lot better than they've shown so far like Fister, Porcello and Jackson. If it all comes together, we might be celebrating in October. If not, changes will be made.
The push begins later this week. Enjoy.
