The Detroit Tigers today made the following announcement regarding catcher/designated hitter Victor Martinez:
Martinez underwent microfracture surgery and repairs to both the medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee on Friday, all of which occurred when he suffered a torn ACL during his off-season conditioning. Friday’s procedure was performed by Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, CO.
The preliminary surgery on Friday went well according to Dr. Steadman and he is optimistic Martinez will be ready to undergo ACL reconstruction surgery on his left knee in approximately six-to-eight weeks. The Tigers continue to expect Martinez to be sidelined for the 2012 season.
Free-agent outfielder Juan Pierre is off the market.
Pierre reportedly signed a minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies early Friday. The deal includes an invitation to spring training.
The Tigers were linked to Pierre as early as last week after the club announced designated hitter Victor Martinez suffered a season-ending injury. Tigers manager Jim Leyland alluded last week to the possibility of adding speed to the top of its lineup as a potential replacement for Martinez.
Pierre and designated hitter Johnny Damon were among a handful of free agents reportedly targeted by the Tigers. It is unclear whether the club remains interested following the addition of first baseman Prince Fielder.
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters Thursday that the club is unlikely to acquire another positional player before spring training. Pitchers are catchers will report Feb. 19 to Lakeland, Fla.
“I think positional player-wise, we're pretty well set,” Dombrowski said during Thursday’s press conference introducing Fielder.
Pierre, 34, leads active players with 554 steals. The left-handed hitter batted .279 with two home runs, 50 RBIs and 27 steals for the Chicago White Sox last season.
A career .296 hitter, he stole 27 bases last year and led the American League in stolen bases in 2010. He made all but two at-bats as the White Sox’s leadoff hitter last season and started 152 games in left field.
