For some reason in sports today we are no longer satisfied with our favorite team winning. Style points are almost equally as important. The Tigers lead the Athletics 2-0 and were handed a game two gift when Coco Crisp dropped a fly ball in the eighth that allowed Detroit to take a brief lead. Many fans now say the "Tigers got lucky," yet those same folks ripped Detroit for their lack of fundamentals and making similar errors during the regular season. Never was anyone saying the opposing team "got lucky," instead placing blame on the team that showed the defensive insuffuciency. The same should be said about Game two....or even game one when an Oakland pitcher struggled with a grounder down the first base line. Ironically it was a play like that which killed the Tigers chances against the Cardinals in the World Series in 2006. The enjoyment of post season ball is that different types of players are given a chance to shine and embrace that October moment (Don Kelly this year, Scott Brosius or Craig Counsell or David Freese in the past). Good fortune is needed in a lot of playoff series in every sport-some of that is a team making a play and some of it is a team that doesn't make a play. You can call the Tigers lucky, but make sure you credit good fortune to their opposition in games the Tigers lost then. It wasn't an easy play on which Crisp committed the error, but it's one he should have had, but Josh Reddick has made two plays that were exceptional so do we wonder what if had he not made those slides grabs? NO because he did make 'em, but both were game-changing catches. The Tigers will take the two wins and try to close out the series in Oakland. If they get another gift from the A's, they'll take it gladly and fly home to wait for their ALCS opponent and who wouldn't. I doubt the Cardinals are worried about the infield fly rule that shouldn't have been called in Atlanta and allowed St. Louis to advance; I doubt the Seahawks are thinking about Golden Tate's last second catch against the Packers that gave them the win. Winning is all that matters....the window dressing is just for us fans to use as a complaint because we're never satisfied unless we're bitching.
